Ayi's Zany Chinese Zodiac

Hey Ayi,
I left Hollywood to get away from New Age ninnies, so why do people keep asking me what my sign is? Why are Chinese people so starstruck, and how does Chinese astrology work anyway?
Yours,
Larry Low-Wye

Dear Larry,
It is common in China for people to ask Ni shu shenme? (What is your zodiac sign?) This is not only a polite way to find out your age, but it's also supposed to lend insight into the kind of person you are.

The Chinese zodiac is most commonly known for its 12 animal symbols, which are not dissimilar in meaning from their counterparts in the Western zodiac. These 12 animals are used to count calendar years, the hours of the day, and to a lesser extent, the days and months as well.

Chinese astrology is a complicated story and one we will save for a later day. However, your Ayi has taken some time out to consult her almanac, so that the next time you are asked what your Chinese zodiac sign is, you will be able to respond with confidence.
