Death & Taxes

Deadlines for citizens of the United Kingdom, United States and Canada to file taxes are all in April. The following are some tips for expatriates of those countries living in Beijing on how, where, and when to file their taxes.

United Kingdom
The British Embassy does not provide forms or consultation for its citizens living in Beijing. Forms and queries can be downloaded from the United Kingdom Inland Revenue Department's website at: www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk. Be sure to send all materials by or on April 5.

United States
American citizens and residents must file even if they did not earn any income in the United States last year. Criteria and regulations resulting from a U.S.ÐChina tax treaty determine whether you have to pay taxes. For more information and to download computerized tax forms go to the IRS website at: www.irs.gov/forms_pubs. You can pick up federal tax forms at the embassy. There are no state forms available nor are there any IRS representatives available for consulting. The post date is no later than April 15.

Canada
A limited selection of forms and guides for non-residents are available at the consular section of the Canadian Embassy. Forms can also be downloaded from the Canada
Customs and Revenue Agency's website at
www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca. Tax returns should be filed on or before April 30.
